Chapter 7

Rafter Jump

Dad pulled the truck through the fancy, black, wrought iron gates to the horse barn. A little, dried-up old man with an unlit cigar in his mouth was sitting on a bale of straw under the lean to. He stood up and walked over to the truck like a gunslinger, his bowed legs swinging side to side.

Dad opened the door, and the little man took the cigar out of his mouth and spat. “Doc, the colt must be backwards because the soles of the feet are facing up. She hasn’t been at it too long, so the colt should be ok.”

“We’ll check it out,” said Dad as he walked around to the back of the truck and opened up his vet box. “Is Dave around tonight, or is he gone on a business trip?”

“The boss and his wife are gone on another trip. I knew something would happen since he’s gone. This’s his St. Pat mare. ’Member, she was the orphan born on St Patrick’s Day that I raised several years ago?”

Dad was filling his bucket with warm water and disinfectant, and I could see his eyebrows rise a little in the weak light from the barn. “Do you have her tied up?”

“She’s fine, Doc. I have ’er tied to the manger in the old box stall.”

Dad gathered his bucket, OB sleeves, and lube, and we went to the barn. I looked at the fancy show wagon with all of the shiny brass on it parked in the corner. Harness was hanging in the tack room with horse collars with brass on them also. Dad and Stan went into the stall, and I peered around the corner. A big, black Percheron mare stood in the stall, grunting as she strained, raising her tail and hunching her back trying to push the foal out. Two black hooves stuck out of the back of her, the soft white soles pointing at the sky.

“Ray, you stay out of the stall in case she swings around or goes down.” Dad started wrapping the short tail to keep it out of the way and keep things clean. He pulled out his OB sleeves and put on some lube to make things slick. He reached in and started feeling around. The mare grunted. “Ouch, she sure can push. I feel ears instead of a tail. The foal is coming upside down with his head pointed toward his chest. Let me see if I can straighten out his head.”

Dad tugged and pushed, straining for all he was worth as the mare did the same. He worked a little, then got some more lube and went back to it. He even had both arms inside at the same time, pushing with one and pulling with the other. It seemed like he was never going to get the foal, when suddenly he about fell over backwards.

“The head came forward, now I just have to get it right side up. I’m going to try twisting the legs. Ready, here it goes.
